Post-Partum
Post-Partum Planning + The New Mother
For 40 weeks you nourished the baby inside you; now it is you who must be nourished
— the first forty days: the essential art of nourishing the new mother
The New Mother
Having a baby is one of the greatest joys a woman can experience. That first glimpse of seeing your baby’s face for the first time, holding them in your arms and feeling their breath against your skin is a wonderfully loving moment like no other.
During pregnancy, your body is designed to give your baby everything they need to make it to term, through the placenta - often at your expense. And then, at birth, the physical act of labour can be extremely intense, challenging and exhausting for most women. If you are breastfeeding, (although extremely satisfying to be able to nourish your baby), it can put a lot of caloric and specific nutrient demands on you. To add to this, most likely you are sleep deprived, not eating properly and feeling like you must do it all!
Your ultimate goal in the weeks after your baby’s arrival is complete nourishment for your body through the foods you eat to restore lost nutrients, boost circulation and enrich breast milk (if breastfeeding). You also need to enjoy this new chapter in your life, from maiden to mother. This is not about ‘bouncing back’ quickly, instead its moving forward and focusing on taking care of yourself so you can properly heal from pregnancy and birth.
